What is white willow bark extract?
In skincare, willow bark extract comes from the bark of the white willow tree and is listed as 'Salix alba extract' as this is the Latin name of the tree. It acts as an anti-inflammatory that helps alleviate the redness, pain, and swelling that are associated with both acne and allergies and sensitivities.
Willow bark extract is usually produced by adding willow bark to a solution which includes alcohol and water for a few days. After a few days of saturation, all beneficial compounds are extracted into the liquid. At this point, solid bark remnants are removed and the alcohol is evaporated off, leaving the beneficial elements behind.
What are AHAs?
AHAs – or Alpha Hydroxy Acids – are a class of chemical compounds which can be either naturally or synthetically derived. Many come from organic sugars such Maple and Sugar Cane. AHAs are used for chemical exfoliation, dissolving the bonds between skin cells to remove dead skin and reveal the smooth skin surface beneath.
How to Use
To use, saturate a cotton pad and sweep across the face, neck, and decolletage once daily before serums and moisturisers.
Users should gauge their own tolerance to the tonic, if their skin becomes sensitive to it we would recommend dropping use to 1-2 times per week. Ensure SPF is applied in the mornings when making use of AHAs as it can encourage sun sensitivity.
Who should use it?
Our AHA Tonic is gentle enough for all skin types but great for those with dull, congested skin.
We would not recommend the AHA tonic to users who are also treating with microdermabrasion because the AHAs are a further exfoliant, this would overstimulate the skin.
